THE ALUMNI COFFEE CHALLENGE
This Month's Mission: Connect with at least 5 alumni from your university now working in Hong Kong or who have worked in Hong Kong. Request 15-minute coffee chats to ask them the insider questions about their career paths, how they found their job, if they have any contacts they could be gold mine for you.
Your Actions:
- Search your university's alumni platform or LinkedIn Alumni tool for 15-20 alumni currently in Hong Kong or with HK work experience
- Create a target list prioritizing those in your desired industries, companies, or who share common backgrounds with you
- Send personalized LinkedIn messages mentioning your shared university connection, complimenting their career path, and requesting a brief 15-minute virtual coffee chat
- Prepare 5-8 tailored questions for each person focusing on how they found their job, insider Hong Kong market tips, and potential introductions to their network
- Schedule and conduct the coffee chats, taking notes on key insights and any referrals they mention
- Before ending each chat, ask: "Is there anyone else you'd recommend I speak with?" or "Would you be open to introducing me if relevant opportunities arise?"
- Send a thank-you email within 24 hours referencing specific advice they shared and any action items you're taking
- Follow up on any contacts or opportunities they mentioned within 48 hours while the conversation is fresh
- Keep your alumni contacts updated on your progress to maintain warm relationships for future opportunities
